← Quick Answers·Shaving
Should you moisturize before or after shaving?
After. Moisturising after shaving supports barrier recovery. Moisturising before shaving makes the blade less effective and can increase nicks.
The shaving action itself removes the top layer of the stratum corneum along with the hair. That's why freshly shaved skin feels different to skin that hasn't been shaved — it's biologically more exposed for a few hours.
Moisturiser applied after shaving helps skin recover its barrier faster. Moisturiser applied before shaving coats the skin and hair, making the blade skip or require more passes — which tends to make irritation worse, not better.
Pre-shave oils are a different category. They're designed to help the blade glide, not to moisturise.
The Stella take
Moisturise after, not before. If your skin still feels tight later in the day, your moisturiser may be under-doing it for your current skin state — something you can see in your hydration scores over a week.
